According to new research from Wood Mackenzie and the American Wind Energy Association (“AWEA”), renewable energy demand by Fortune 1000 companies could reach 85 GW by 2030. Many top companies like Facebook and Google had already contracted for more than 6 GW of wind and solar power purchase agreements (“PPAs”) in 2018 as the cost of these forms of energy continue to decline and pressure from environmentally conscious consumers increases. In July of this year, that number had risen to 8.6 GW.
The Wood Mackenzie and AWEA report note that while the corporate demand for renewables is increasing, the overall renewable generation for Fortune 100 companies is just 5 percent of their total energy consumption, leaving immense potential for growth.
