Constellation Energy has announced a 20-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with Microsoft to supply electricity to its mid-Atlantic data centers from the Unit 1 reactor at the Three Mile Island nuclear plant in Pennsylvania, which was retired in 2019. The deal highlights growing interest from data centers in nuclear energy due to its large, reliable, and carbon-free power generation. These data centers require large amounts of power to run cloud computing and artificial intelligence programs.
Similarly, Amazon Web Services (AWS) signed a PPA earlier this year for power from another Pennsylvania nuclear plant (Talen Energy’s Susquehanna). These agreements reflect data centers’ need for steady, emissions-free electricity to meet rising demand.
