Dominion Energy has completed its 12 MW pilot offshore wind project off the coast of Virginia, consisting of two Siemens Gamesa 6 MW turbines. The project is expected to be connected to the grid later in summer, following testing. The permitting, design, installation, and operations experience from the pilot will allow Dominion to move forward with a larger project. The full project, with construction beginning in 2024, is expected to consist of 180 new SG 14-222 DD wind turbines and have a capacity of 2,600 MW by 2026. It is currently the largest announced offshore wind project in North America.
The 12 MW pilot project, located 12 miles offshore, was the first offshore wind farm to be approved by the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) and installed in federal waters. It was the second constructed in the United States.
