According to the EIA, in an effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, several natural gas-fired power plants across the U.S. are exploring ways to integrate hydrogen into their fuel streams. This is being pursued through testing hydrogen cofiring, upgrading turbines to use hydrogen blends, and constructing new plants capable of utilizing a hydrogen-natural gas mix.
While hydrogen use is not yet widespread, interest is growing thanks to policies like the EPA’s updated power plant rules and tax credits from the Inflation Reduction Act. Multiple facilities have already tested or plan to test hydrogen blends, showing promising reductions in carbon emissions.
