Natural gas consumption by US electric power generators fell in 2021. The level of natural gas-fired generation declined resulting in consumption falling 3% compared to the 2020 level. The shift marks the first decline in natural gas consumption by the US power sector in over four years.
According to the EIA, natural gas prices increased in 2021. The relatively high prices made natural gas a less competitive fuel option and incentivized exports. Despite the decline, natural gas generation capacity and consumption is expected to increase in 2022.
